INTERVIEW AND STORY BY KATINA GOULAKOS
Imagista: Where did you grow up?
Sarah: We both grew up in Upstate New York, we actually went to school together, both pre-school and high school.
Imagista: Where are you currently based?
Sarah: Los Angeles for a few years and Brooklyn for a bit before that.
Imagista: How did you guys meet / decide to start doing music together?
Josh: It happened after Sarah finished college. I had been playing in New York City in a band with my brothers and I quit to focus on my own material. When Sarah moved back Upstate, we rekindled our friendship. I asked her if she wanted to sing on one of my tracks and it took off from there.
Imagista: What are you currently working on that you’re most excited about?
Sarah: We have two separate EP’s coming out. One is a hip hop remix, taking Phantogram songs and remixing them with MC’s that we like. The second is a more minimal contextualization of a few songs from our album.
Imagista: How would you describe your approach to your work? (Your training etc)
Josh: It varies for the most part, I do not really have a formula.
Sarah: When Josh makes a beat that he thinks is dope, I try my hardest to turn it into a song. Every song is different, sometimes they start with the piano or a guitar. We are very visual with our writing. It varies for the most part – no formula – when josh makes a beat, he either thinks it’s dope or he doesn’t or he holds on to it.
Imagista: Who is the one that does most of the writing?
Sarah: We are both very active when it comes to writing. A lot of people think Josh is just the beats and producer but that is not the case at all. We often write lyrics together, one will have a line and the other will feed off of it.
Imagista: What is the best advice you’ve ever been given regarding music?
Josh: I think it was to be yourself and make music you want to hear. Not to follow the trend and to maintain my integrity and honesty all while creating something that is cool. I mean no one ever told me that, but it is the best advice I have given myself.
Sarah: Big Boi from Outkast has had a huge influence on me. Whenever he has given me advice it is similar to what Josh said before; be fresh and new, be a true artist and try to do things differently. Continue to reinvent yourself and do not be afraid of trying something different.
Imagista: What do you love most about what you do?
Josh: I love that I could make music for a living and I do not need to wait tables anymore, knock on wood, I feel very blessed.
Sarah: Me too, I will add that it feels really good when an artist you admire tells you they love your music. Also, our fans loving what we create means the world to me.
Imagista: If you were not doing this, what would you guys be doing?
Josh: I could see myself being more of a visual artist. If God forbid I went deaf, I would try and pick up painting.
Sarah: Audition for SNL and become the funniest woman in America!
Imagista: What do you do to recharge yourself and/or re-inspire yourself?
Josh: That is a great question. We are always so busy, we just got off a five month tour and went straight to making EP’s. The best way I know how to recharge is spending time at home and doing “normal” things like eating at restaurants and going to see a movie, little things you do not get to do on tour.
Sarah: Being and feeling normal is something we strive for.
Imagista: Is there anything else you’d like to share with the Imagista audience?
Josh: If you have not seen us play live, get your tickets! We put on a really good show and will not disappoint. We put a lot of effort in not only the music but the design and general performance, it is really worth coming to see!
Imagista: Where can we find you online? ( Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, IMDB, Website, Etc.)
