Singer/Actress Lovi Poe has a high bar when it comes to her work. From career-establishing performances in films like Mayohan and Sagrada Familia, as well as a textured career as a recording artist, the daughter of the late action film star-turned-politician, Fernando Poe Jr., has cast a very wide net for herself.
Her new single, ‘Lost’ is part of a forthcoming EP along with the sultry summertime phantasmagoria ‘Under’ which she released earlier this year. The tune is a collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Ømen, alongside Kris KeyZ. With her next single already on the horizon before the collection’s release, Poe is poised to storm her way to the United States.
IMAGISTA: How has the pandemic been for you?
LOVI POE: It’s given me the chance to slow down and reflect. Because I’m a workaholic, on my free time I usually enjoy spending time alone. I still do. But when the pandemic hit, I just realized how much I miss spending time with my loved ones. I need to make more of an effort in nurturing my relationships, too.
IMAGISTA: Who are your musical influences?
LOVI POE: I grew up listening to Patti Austin, Natalie Cole and Bread. And where I’m from, there’s Regine Velasquez. They made me fall in love with music.
IMAGISTA: Was having a famous father ever a problem when establishing yourself as an artist?
LOVI POE: It was more of a challenge than an easy way in. In order to be myself, I had to let go of the thought of being his daughter. My decisions would’ve been clouded due to the pressure of the legacy he has left behind. Even without the intention of having my own identity, I believe I was able to walk a different path. And, every step of achievement and mistakes I’ve made lead me to my own authentic self, which I think is important as an artist.
IMAGISTA: How do you navigate the public’s expectations?
LOVI POE: I set high standards for myself. I do my best to reach the level of expectation I give myself. I always say when I go home from work satisfied, I’m happy. Then, let’s just see if they’re happy with it.
IMAGISTA: What does music give you that acting doesn’t?
LOVI POE: It brings me back in time. Music is a tool I use when I’m acting on set. To be able to deliver a scene, i listen to certain songs. Music leads me there.
IMAGISTA: What does ‘Lost’ mean to you?
LOVI POE: Reminisce and remember the times we’ve loved and lost.
IMAGISTA: Do you prefer the recording studio or performing live?
LOVI POE: Performing live. I love the adrenaline it gives me.
