Imagista: Where are you from?

Joey King: Los Angeles and I am still here. I live in the Valley, which is amazing. I think LA is just the best city, besides New York.

Imagista: How did you get into acting? Do you come from a creative family?

Joey King: How acting really came about for me was my grandmother. My grandmother was huge on theater and performing when she was younger and as she got older she really talked to me and my sisters about that. My sisters wanted to try it and I was still young at the time. They started getting into commercials and when I was around four years old I told my mother I wanted to do that also and she was like no, not another one! She agreed to let me take improv and theater classes with them and that is what we did. We had the best time and became even closer as sisters. After that we just kind of gradually moved up to commercials, TV appearances and eventually film.

Imagista: How do you balance being teenager and being an actress?

Joey King: I would say that my life is pretty far from normal in such a good way. I am so lucky to do what I do and love what I do so much. As far as keeping a normal life, I still got a good education, I graduated High School already, I studied a lot. It is really nice to have sisters, a dad, mom and grandmother that are super supportive of you and friends who are really supportive. Everyone in my life is happy for me and has my best interest at heart and that has helped me keep a sane attitude.

Imagista: You have a few things coming out like Wish Upon and Smartass, can you tell us a little bit about each?

Joey King: Wish Upon is a psychological thriller that was super fun to work on. I love anything that messes with your mind. It is very clever and is going to be very exciting for people to watch. It is going to have a crazy twist that you will not expect! Smartass is a film I actually did when I was fifteen years old and it had not gotten distribution because it is pretty racy and raunchy. It is probably the craziest role I have ever done so I am so excited to have people see it.

I also have a Netflix film coming late in the fall called The Kissing Booth, starring Joel Courtney and Jacob Elordi, who is amazing. It is a really cute rom-com about a girl coming into her own as a teenager and she falls in love with her best friends brother. It is a really funny story and a great one to watch!

Imagista: You mentioned you filmed Smartass when you were fifteen, how old are you now?

Joey King: I am turning 18 this July actually!

Imagista: How do you get into character as an actor? Do you have a specific approach or is it different for each role?

Joey King: It is different for each role that I play. I think what helps me get into character most is reading the material most and getting to know the character as if she was me. For each character comes a different process. My thing is that I do not want to over think things so much to the point where I am second guessing myself to the point that it becomes unnatural. I always want to feel natural, no matter what character I am playing.

Imagista: Who is your biggest inspiration?

Joey King: There are a lot of people who inspire me. One person is Jessica Chastain who I do not know personally. Another is a woman I have met a couple of times, she is on a show with my sister Hunter and her name is Zoe Lister Jones and she has a film coming out soon called Band Aid. It is a great story and I think she is incredible because she wrote it, directed it, produced it, which was super inspiring to me. I love seeing females kick-ass in this industry.

Imagista: Do you remember the best piece of advice you have ever been given in regards to acting?

Joey King: My mom, whenever I go out for an audition, she is always there to remind me that the crazy things going on in my mind do not really matter. I feel like with all the advice she has given me over the years it is hard to pick one that is the best. She is just very inspiring when it comes to pep talks!

Imagista: On the advice note, do you have any advice for young actors trying to break into this industry?

Joey King: I recently had a friend that went in for a role that they were so perfect for and so excited for. It turns out they did not get the part. It is hard because you never know what people have in mind. You can’t get down and think that is was you or the performance. Yes, you can always better yourself but in the long run there is really not much that you can do once you have done your best. If their mind is in another direction you need to pick yourself up and just keep trying.

Imagista: Is there anything else you want our audience to know about?

Joey King: I would love them to know that I can solve a Rubik’s Cube in under 1 minutes and 40 seconds!
