Psycho-Spiritual Surf Rocker Idgy Dean’s new EP is being released on the Summer Solstice—a fitting date for the up-and-coming star who counts love, death, space, yoga, and philosophy among his inspirations. Imagista caught up with Idgy recently and learned how he got into music and what we can expect to see from him in the next few months.

Imagista: Where are you from originally?

Idgy Dean: I was born and raised in suburban New Jersey, got Liberal Arts-educated in New York, and had some formative chapters of living in Italy, San Francisco, and Argentina. I’ve been based in New York for the last 8 years.

Imagista: Where are you currently based?

Idgy Dean: Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York, USA

Imagista: How did you get into music?

Idgy Dean: The better question is, how did the music get into me? I grew up with a drum set and karaoke machine in the house. My Dad and big brother had very broad and eclectic tastes in music, so really, I just grew up listening to a lot of different things—Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson, Led Zeppelin, Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy, Aphex Twin, Ace of Base, Björk, Marilyn Manson, Radiohead, New Order… Around age 10 I really wanted to play drums. I got into guitars in middle school, and my only real lesson there was how to play the power chords for “Basket Case” by Green Day. I never learned any formal chords/techniques beyond that. All my chops got developed making home four-track recordings, and playing in numerous punk/metal/indie rock bands throughout high school and college. It all comes down to how you listen and who you play with, I think.

Imagista: Can you describe your style & sound?

Idgy Dean: Psycho-Spiritual Surf Rock and/or Tribal Psychedelic Pop Imagista:What are you currently working on that you are most excited about? Idgy Dean: My latest EP, Heavy Cosmic Lumber, is being released on the Summer Solstice. We’re throwing a huge sun worshipping party at House of Yes here in Bushwick to celebrate. I’m excited to see where these songs take me. I’m really looking forward to touring California later this summer, and Europe in October, all the while working on writing fresh new things for a future full-length record.Imagista:What is the best part about being a musician?Getting to live a truly expressive existence. Being able to create something out of nothing and share it in real-time with lots of other people, loudly. The ability to move and inspire others. The occupation and labor of articulating abstraction, and getting at the truth. Knowing how to curate moods and memories.

Imagista: Who is your biggest musical inspiration?

Idgy Dean: Love, Death, Space, Yoga, Philosophy.

Imagista: What can we expect to see from you in the future?

Idgy Dean: More and more Music Videos… Live Performance Art… Signature Yoga Situations… Surf Retreats… Meditation Workshops… A TV Show… A Feature Film… A World Tour… A Book… A Restaurant… A Life Worth Living.

Imagista: Is there anything else you want our Imagista audience to know?

Idgy Dean: I always have and always will be a sucker for the metaphysical… “Everybody is I, you all know you’re you, and whosesoever beings exist throughout all galaxies, it doesn’t make any difference. You are all of them. And when they come into being, that’s you coming into being. You know that very well, only you don’t have to remember the past in the same way you don’t have to think about how you work your thyroid gland, or whatever else it is in your organism. You don’t have to know how to shine the sun. You just do it, like you breath. Doesn’t it really astonish you that you are this fantastically complex thing, and that you’re doing all this and you never had any education in how to do it? Never learned, but you’re this miracle?” – Alan Watts
