Hair is personality defining, hair is a statement, hair is controversial and the movie “Hair” was an awesome anti-establishment film. From cancer patients to skinheads and from Mermaids to L’oreal advertising, hair has been a human obsession!

In the 60’s boys were thrown out of school from having hair longer than one inch over their ears. My friend’s father suffered this fate in his late teens, subsequently his whole life was marred by this severe punishment for his hairstyle choice!

They used to shave women’s heads who were branded ‘whores’ by society, they shave soldiers heads to strip them of their individuality, their person. It’s undeniable that hair matters as a form of personal expression… and as a creative expression there is no doubt that hair clearly illustrates your statement.

As a photographer the shape, texture and form of hair can make or break an image. Hair solidifies your vision, is it rigid or is it wild and moving? Will I wrap my subject in gushing locks or will scrape it all away to clearly see the face and eyes? Hair is fascinating and extremely hard to manage, it’s mercurial and temperamental, a little too much moisture and it falls like a bad souffle, too much product and a rigid fake shell overwhelms its subject…

I have a love/hate relationship with hair as I find myself very much a slave to the elusive concept of good hair… but on this day with Raina Leon I was a blessed witness to hair perfection and achievement! Pared with the absolute divine creative output of Caroline Hernandez, a consummate professional who mixed her own colors, pre prepared dense eyelashes in various colors and just brought her absolute A-game to the table of creation! In the end, exceptional hair and makeup paired makes for beautiful art!

Hair dresser Raina Leon:
My ideas for hair for this shoot simply started with size. I wanted to capture big hair in different shapes and present it as a mashup of totally different eras. Sounds a little crazy but that was the point – to “blend” eras that otherwise stand very much on their own in terms of style. For the light auburn and black beehive looks, I wanted to pull together the bigness of Victorian hair, 60s updos, and add a splash of purposeful messiness.

I think Rie styled and shot the look with somewhat of a 90s beauty vibe which also added to the mashup. It’s all kind of fun and weird and beautiful.

Products Used: R+Co Turntable Curl Defining Cream and Vicious Strong Hold Hairspray.

I also love the bigness and shapes of 70s, 80s, and 90s hair. For the second look, I wanted lots of tighter curls in a down style. My inspiration was the blending of two iconic moments: Donna Summer’s Once Upon a Time album cover (1977) and Flashdance the movie (1983). Then I threw all the hair up into a huge updo for another look. This updo, the makeup, and the popped collar all felt very 90s glam to me.

Products Used: R+Co Twister Curl Primer and Outer Space Flexible Hairspray. No matter how style changes over time and no matter how I continue to grow as a hairstylist, there are fundamentals in hair design that transcend eras. I love that.

Make Up Artist, Caroline Hernandez, talks about her experience on this shoot.

This was a fun project to work on as a makeup artist, as it was so open to interpretation and could have been taken in so many different ways.

Raina cleverly created so many hair looks that could stand alone as individual looks, or be tied into a story. For me the challenge was how I was going to play my part and compliment her designs. I could choose to see them as stand alone pieces, or as a whole. For example, the ‘beehive’ this could have been taken in a direction which nodded towards the Georgian era, or, it could be kitsch and 1960’s. I decided to go down the latter route and have fun creating makeup looks that nodded towards decades of the last half of the 20th century, with a modern twist on each, and make this the story for me.
