While most fourteen-year-old boys are honing up on their Fortnite skills Gabriel Bateman has been busy working on developing his acting chops. Gabriel is starring in the movie “Childs Play” which, ironically, really isn’t for kids, is in theaters now. Gabriel was kind enough to take a little time out from his busy schedule to shoot some amazing photos with Maarten De Boer and to chat with Imagista about his promising career and his life.

Imagista: Where are you from?

Gabriel Bateman: I grew up in central California.

Imagista: Do you think growing up in California had an influence on your choice of career?

Gabriel Bateman: When it came to that point it was definitely more convenient to live in California. It was helpful for sure but it did not play a part in my wanting to become an actor.

Imagista: So what made you want to become an actor?

Gabriel Bateman: Well, my sister was an actress before I was and I watched a behind the scenes video of her on set and I thought that looked really fun so I asked my mom if I could do it also.

Imagista: Do you feel lucky to have such great support from your family?

Gabriel Bateman: Yes, my parents have been very supportive, especially my mom.

Imagista: Who has been your biggest inspiration as an artist?

Gabriel Bateman: I don’t really know about inspiration but I think my favorite actor is Christian Bale.

Imagista: You have been in a lot of amazing projects, which one would you consider was your big break?

Gabriel Bateman: I don’t really know that I have had mine yet, but I am hoping Child’s Play is going to be it for me!

Gabriel Bateman: I don’t really know that I have had mine yet, but I am hoping Child’s Play is going to be it for me!

Imagista: So let’s talk about Child’s Play a little bit! What was that experience like for you?

Gabriel Bateman: Filming was amazing. Everyone on set was so kind and I made so many great relationships, some that I still in touch with. It was one of the shortest films I have ever done and the life on set was phenomenal. As far as what has been coming after filming, press and everything like that has been like a dream. It was really, really fun to be part of. I don’t think I have ever done this much press before so it is all very exciting.

Imagista: How do you deal with working on a horror movie, does it ever play in your psyche?

Gabriel Bateman: Not really. The feeling on horror has never really been different than on any other film for me. I was so comfortable with the cast and crew and it was like one big family so I never really let the horror aspect get to my head.

Imagista: You are so young and you have such a “real” job, how do you stay grounded at such a young age in this crazy industry?

Gabriel Bateman: Definitely my family. Especially my siblings, they will keep me in check if ever I am getting too high in the clouds.

Imagista: You mentioned your sister, how many siblings do you have?

Gabriel Bateman: A lot, I have 5 older brothers and 3 older sisters!

Imagista: What is the best advice you have been given in regards to acting?

Gabriel Bateman: When I first started acting, my sister told me to not take anything personally, to have thick skin and to not take anything too seriously.

Imagista: Have you faced a lot of rejection?

Gabriel Bateman: Of course, I don’t book everything I go out for. I think everyone faces rejection in life regardless of what career you are in, actors just face a little bit more than the rest.

Imagista: How have you dealt with that rejection?

Gabriel Bateman: Honestly, I don’t know if there is any way to deal with that rejection, I just think that you need to move on and focus on the next thing. When you book a job, your focus needs to be there. So I guess, time and hard work get you over the rejection.

Imagista: Besides acting, is there anything else you are passionate about?

Gabriel Bateman: Yes of course! I love basketball and archery and rock climbing and hiking. There are too many things that I am passionate about to list right now but I love anything outdoors. I also love reading and writing!
