STORY AND INTERVIEW BY KATINA GOULAKOS
Imagista: Where did you grow up?
Dominic Adams: I was born and raised in Bristol, right outside of London.
Imagista: Where are you currently based?
DA: I am rarely home, but I keep my clothes in Los Angeles.
Imagista: What are you currently working on that you’re most excited about?
DA: I am really excited about the mini-series Six, which is coming out January 18th on the History Channel. I am really proud to be part of a group of such fantastic people who worked very hard to create something special, which I think we have achieved. The show is meant to provoke people’s thoughts and to challenge preconceived notions that some viewers may have. I play an antagonist who is of Lebanese descent, but was born in America, who decides to turn his back on the United States.
Imagista: How would you describe your approach to your work? (Your training, etc)
DA: My approaches vary depending on the role. For me, the most grounding thing about being trained in England, is that we touch on so many different areas and elements in regards to dramatic acting, from Greek core work to mask work, we cover it all. I believe that the more you train and perfect your craft the closer you are to booking jobs, you can never be linear in your acting. This role took a lot of research, I needed to understand how our lives, religions and acts can get to that point. Research is an important part of preparation.
Imagista: What is the best advice you’ve ever been given regarding acting (modelling, being an artist, singing, dancing, etc)?
DA: I am grateful to have had so many great teachers throughout my lifetime and I am fortunate to have received a lot of great advice from them. When I finished drama school training, I was not prepared for the business side of the industry and how hard that aspect of it is. Kevin Spacey is a really smart man and I learnt a lot from him. When I was starting out, I was very keen on making things happen right away. I was told by many people, including Kevin to not forget my breath. If I am doing the right things and acting the best I can that is my job, it is up to others to notice what you are doing. I love to learn and receive information, that is never going to stop.
Imagista: What do you love most about being an actor (artist, musician, etc)?
DA: The opportunity to have have to do the same thing everyday. The opportunity to get to experience a life outside of your own life, outside of anything you know. It is so exciting to get to take part and have your eyes open to things that are completely unrelated to who you are but you get to experience it through playing different characters – that is really a gift to me. When I worked in an office, doing the same thing everyday, I found it to be very difficult.
Imagista: What do you do to recharge yourself and/or re-inspire yourself?
DA: The gym. It is an hour and a half where I get a lot of mental and physical peace. It helps me in terms of balance and getting focused. I also love reading. I love to learn and expand my knowledge by reading about everything I can. I read as a retreat to let my mind wonder.
Imagista: Where can we find you online? ( Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, IMDB, Website, etc.)
Imagista: Is there anything else you’d like to share with the Imagista audience?
DA: We are all beautiful and wonderful, and to take a chance and enjoy this beautiful gift of life that we have all been given.
